Simple Steps to Improving the Efficiency of your Concrete Garage

October 27, 2017 by Lynn

With climate change being high on the agenda for Government officials across the world, it’s time that homeowners here in the UK begin to make their homes more efficient to lower their carbon footprint. One of the least efficient rooms in most homes is the garage, and that’s because it is an after-thought of most people because it isn’t always seen as a key area of the home.

But a concrete garage can be easily made into an efficient room, which in turn could actually lead people to start saving money on energy bills in the long term.

Here is our top tips on how you can turn your cold and costly concrete garage into an affordable and energy efficient part of your home:

Doors and windows

A lot of concrete garages are cold places, particularly in the winter, and that’s because most garage doors, internal doors and windows have gaps that can let in the cold air. One good idea, particularly for an internal door that goes into your garage, is to install weather stripping seals around the door frame. This means that no drafts will enter your home, and it will keep the air in the garage in there.

When it concerns your concrete garage door, you can apply insulation to the door through the means of what is known as an insulation kit. These can be picked up at any local DIY store and include a roll of insulation, tape and gloves. This will also prevent leaks into your garage which may come from the increase in rain during the winter months.

Meanwhile, if you have a concrete garage that has windows they need to be energy certified to keep out drafts, just like the windows you would install in your home. Generally, a lot of homeowners don’t have windows in their concrete garages, it’s more so if you are looking to convert it.

Insulate

If there is one thing that will keep your concrete garage warm and more efficient it’s insulating the walls and floor. Newer homes will always be insulated, but some garages, including those connected to your home, may not be. To keep your home and garage warm to save on energy bills during the winter, insulate your concrete garage walls by rolling the insulation between joists in the wall. We recommend you speak to a professional before you take on this task, as any errors could lead to you paying more money out in the long run.

Similarly to the walls of your garage, you should also look to sealing the edge of your garage flooring, where it meets the walls. You can do this by using a sealant based caulk, which is again available from most DIY stores. By doing this you will prevent any warm air from leaving the garage by falling through the gaps. And whilst you are working on the flooring of your garage, it might be a good idea to start sealing up any cracks in your concrete garage floor, you can use a similar sealant to do this.

Energy saving

Climate change is one of the biggest topics of conversation at the moment, with one home improvement contributing positively towards this being the installation of solar panels. This form of energy is becoming more popular with homeowners, and that’s because they can reduce energy bills massively. Using natural sunlight you will be able to light up your home and your garage, and luckily for homeowners, there is some amazing deals on with solar panels at the moment, meaning it might be a real cost-effective solution to reducing your carbon footprint.

But if solar panels aren’t for you then you could still also make your concrete garage more efficient by using LED lightbulbs. These will also reduce your energy bills and only use 12 watts of electricity which can actually create a very similar amount of light as a 60 watt bulb so you won’t even notice a difference!

It’s so important now that homeowners across the UK and even around the world, start to become more energy efficient to reduce their carbon footprint. By following the above simple steps, your concrete garage could become much more efficient like the rest of your home.

Budget Grocery Shopping Tips to Save Money

October 27, 2017 by Lynn

Have you noticed how much of your overall budget you spend on groceries? Grocery shopping is a significant expense for most families and households, but there are ways to make it more affordable. Whether you’re saving to buy a house, put the kids through College, or just want some extra spending money… Here are few tips to avoid extra expenses on groceries:

  1. Shop on a full stomach. You’ll buy less snacks and/or things you don’t usually buy – and only buy groceries, not gifts and all the extra stuff, at the grocery store.
  2. Shop without the kids. Kids are kids, they will want everything in the store – presents, toys and sugary junk food that costs an arm and a leg. So, if you can, try shopping without small children throwing extra things into your cart 😉
  3. Make a list beforehand and follow it strictly. Specially while shopping with kids.
  4. Plan out what you will be eating in the week and get things accordingly. You can plan the kids lunches ahead of time and prep dinners in the crock pot!
  5. Shop only once a week. You’ll tend to spend more if you stop at the store every day or several times a week.
  6. Shop when you have energy and aren’t worn out from a busy day. It’s easier to focus and make wise choices when you’ve got energy and aren’t preoccupied.
  7. Return your bottles and cans for the deposit that you paid. If you’ve got kids, get them to help with this job and let them keep the cash they earn.
  8. Shop in familiar stores when you’re tired, stressed or in a hurry. You’ll find what you need and be able to get out with what you need quickly.
  9. Plan meals so that you have leftovers for lunch the next day, or freeze leftovers for a quick meal another day.
  10. Package your own treats, juices and snacks. Buy the large package or snacks and a box of baggies and make your own individually wrapped packages to grab on the run.

These are few tips which can help you with your budget.

Easy Ways To Get Your Kids To Brush Their Teeth

October 26, 2017 by Lynn

Let’s face it, if we didn’t teach our kids what to do, someone else would (television, teachers, other children). One of the habits they must learn early from their parents are the habits of hygiene. These habits have been around since early civilization began to invent and find new ways of staying clean. These methods are to keep us healthy and free of bacteria, and they make us good human beings. No one wants to talk to someone with bad breath or body odour. For this reason, this article’s main focus is how to get your kids to brush their teeth.

Healthy Habits

After learning how to walk, your kids must learn how to brush their teeth. It’s a daily routine and kids don’t like routines. You need to make it fun for them and must provide good reasons why brushing their teeth will make their life better. This is a simple selling technique. How will your kids benefit from buying your product? In this case, brushing their teeth regularly.

In order to make it fun and exciting for your kids to brush their teeth, pump up the event just like a marketer does. Have a regular “teeth brushing time” so that both you and your kids know when the event will take place. They already know the location, but it may be beneficial to change the location for brushing teeth from their rooms, to your bathroom, to the kitchen sink. This will prevent boredom and routine.

Have a timer to create excitement and scarcity. Have you ever seen countdown clocks in websites that sell products? For example, a product has a timer next to it saying there are only 24 hours before the sale ends. This exact tactic will work wonders on your kids. They will be excited that there are ten minutes before brushing their teeth.

During the main event, you should have their favourite music playing, or a show that they like. This will distract them from the actual act of brushing their teeth and will make it easier for them to get it done. When they are brushing their teeth, it is also a good idea to use the timer again, this time to make sure they are brushing their teeth for the right amount of time.

You must supervise your kids when they are brushing their teeth, but don’t become police-like, instead, cheer them on as if they’re in a contest. Another way to get your kids to brush their teeth is to have a future reward for them. For example, for every time they are on time to brush their teeth, give them a star. Put a star counter on the wall and for every ten stars they get, or every ten days that they are on time, they will get a trip to their favourite store to select a toy. Then, after thirty stars, they will receive the product they chose. Make sure to set a budget for this, or it may end up being detrimental to your budget.

Finally, set a good example for your kids. Let them see you brushing your teeth and teach them the right way to do it. Take them to the dentist in Sydney or in your local area for your check up and make sure the dentist praises how good your teeth are. Having a third party validate your actions and edify you, will create a good image in their mind and they’ll want to be like you.

I hope this article helped and it’s up to you to get creative.

How to Properly Maintain Your Vinyl

October 25, 2017 by Lynn

Whether you have come into a sizable collection of vinyl records or you were merely curious about them as they seem to have risen in popularity, it is important to realize that vinyl is a very different substance than what you might be used to with CDs, DVDs or, if you really fancy your retro media, laserdiscs. While the previously mentioned forms of digital media are all composed of a polycarbonate plastic, vinyl records are made from polyvinyl chloride that has been made flexible through a plasticizer; this means that vinyl records are significantly more at risk of warping from high temperatures than digital forms of media, as well as being more prone to developing a static charge.

Upkeep and Repair

In the decades since the introduction of vinyl records, several tools and techniques have arisen to preserve their quality by doing it yourself. The previously mentioned issue of attracting a static charge comes from the relationship of dust particles and vinyl. The occasional “pop” or “click” generated from playing a well-worn record is the result of the needle passing over statically-charged dust that has settled into the natural grooves of the record. While some vendors may carry vinyl cleaners in their inventory, your best bet is to use a record-safe brush that will collect dust particles with minimum damage to the record’s shape, a plastic-safe cleaning solution and a soft towel to gently work through the grooves.

Approaches to Storage

Unlike with CDs and DVDs, that can safely stack up in a pile, the physical construction of vinyl requires that collectors put in a bit more work to maintain their personal record catalogs; piling them up like a traditional CD spindle will result in a warped mass of PVC that will produce nothing but noise when played on a turntable, if even that. Invest in a tall multilevel shelf that can accommodate the width of your records-vinyl should always be stored vertically so as to avoid warping-and that can be positioned well out of the way of solar exposure; ideally, you want to keep your record library in a location that is free of heat and moisture. Furthermore, you should always keep your records in their slipcases when not in use; slipcases are the best way to protect your vinyl from dust and sunlight.

“What is a Warped Record and How Did It Get That Way?”

Because of its plastic-like nature, a record warps when its shape has been maligned through heat, regular pressure or both. While you can play a record that has been slightly warped, the sound quality will suffer. In addition to the warp-inducing pressure generated from stacking vinyls like they were plates, records can also become pressure-warped from being tightly shrink-wrapped within their album covers. Fortunately, you can avoid this problem by looking into which venues practice this bad habit and shopping elsewhere.

While some say that you should fight fire with fire, using heat to soften and mold a warped vinyl record back into alignment is a horrible idea! While you may succeed in leveling out the physical record, the grooves responsible for making music are going to be even worse than before. Records that become sufficiently warped may be known to “skip”-the player’s needle will be pushed backward, resulting in an audio loop.

The Importance of Thickness

Thickness is a common listed detail with most records. The thicker the disc, the more resilient it is to long-term use. Even though new records are created with a thickness of 180 grams, every play session slightly erodes a record’s durability.

When Is The Proper Time To Seek A Revocable Trust And Why?

October 24, 2017 by Lynn

If you have wealth that you want to distribute to your loved ones, then you need to make sure that you plan ahead. There are a few options available to you based on your needs, but one that provides a few advantages is a revocable trust. Although there are several varieties of trusts out there, revocable trusts can be better for you and those you wish to provide for, depending on the situation. Today we’re going to discuss the ins and outs of revocable trusts, from how they work to whether or not you need to apply for an EIN online.

What is a Revocable Trust?

This is a type of trust whereby the grantor (the person creating it) can make changes and amendments as he or she sees fit. This kind of trust must be drafted when the grantor is still alive, as it becomes irrevocable after death. The name of this trust refers to the fact that the grantor can revoke the agreement at any time.

Why is this Trust Beneficial?

When figuring out the right way to disperse funds to family members and loved ones, a trust is a good option because it has strict rules about how it can operate. Also, it can pay out before your death, making it much more open-ended than a will.

A revocable trust is ideal for the following reasons:

  • If probate (proving validity of a trust or will) is going to be complicated or expensive
  • You can save money on federal estate taxes
  • Enables you to draft plans for disabled beneficiaries
  • Allows you to dictate when the trust pays out (i.e., when the trustee reaches a certain age)
  • You don’t have to disclose the details to the public
  • You can name yourself as the trustee if you like
  • You can ensure that your funds are managed correctly in case of death or disability to yourself
  • It provides long-term access to resources without legal or court interruption
  • The trust is protected if the grantor becomes incapacitated or dies

Overall, you should seek to create a revocable trust if you want more control over your money and how it’s distributed. For more information on these trusts as well as a church Tax ID number, visit www.irs-ein-tax-id.com.
