4 Ways to Keep Your Kids Amused on a Rainy Day

May 24, 2018 by Lynn

There are few feelings quite as disheartening as opening your curtains on a Saturday morning, only to be greeted with a deluge of rain from the heavens. Not only does that keep you from doing what you wanted to do today, it means you need to find something for the kids to do as well! Here are 4 excellent places to start.

Board Games

Board games are the perfect antidote to being bored. They aren’t as common a sight as they once were. Many of us grew up in homes that had dozens of board games (at least half of which would have pieces missing), and we have fond memories of passing many a rainy day sat around them. Today, with the ubiquitous nature of technology, many kinds find the idea of playing on a physical board very old fashioned.

You can find digital versions of many of the most popular board games ever made, often at a fraction of the price of the physical set. This can help to draw in the interest of children who would otherwise be uninterested in an ‘analogue’ form of entertainment.

Watch Something Enriching

One of the most common go-to activities for a rainy day is, of course, the television. Many parents would like it if they could get their kids to spend a little less time with their heads buried in their screens. However, if you choose the right thing for them to watch, there is no reason why a few hours in front of the TV can’t be time well spent.

Of course, any educational films or videos you can find will be a good choice, but they don’t have to be explicitly educational. Depending on the age of your kids, you might want to show them a movie that conveys a positive message to young children.

Homework Help

Getting children to do their homework is a common struggle for many parents. Unfortunately, there are no simple answers here, what works to motivate one child won’t necessarily work for another. However, one of the common themes among many children who are unwilling to do their homework is that they feel like they are losing time from more enjoyable activities. As a parent, one of the most important lessons you will have to teach them is that sometimes, the right thing to do isn’t the thing that feels best. With the rain pouring outside, preventing them from playing as they normally would, it might be easier to coax them into doing the work they need to.

Arts and Crafts

Why not take the opportunity to indulge their, and your own, creative side? There are an infinite number of art and craft projects that you can do at home. Whatever materials you happen to have lying around can be utilized in the making of arts and crafts. If you aren’t sure where to begin, there are lots of great resources online. One of the best I’ve found for finding stuff to do with my kids is reasonstoskipthehousework.com.

Many parents dread the next rainy day! But there really is no need. It is a good idea to have a list of go-to activities for when the weather is preventing you from being outside. Remember, boredom is the enemy, not your kids!

Rainy Day Activities For Children

April 25, 2018 by Lynn

Don’t let a rainy day take the fun away from you and your kids. Instead, why not use it as an excuse to do activities you can only do in the house. If your children can’t entertain themselves, then here are some great ways to have fun as a family.

Board Games

A classic way to have fun in a group is through board games, which are quick to set up and quick to put away with no fuss. There are many board games out there suitable for children and they can often be used to teach them new and interesting things with nearly endless replayability.

Paper Crafts

The term “paper crafts” spans a wide range of activities and can be done in any way you want it to be. It is extremely cheap and all you need are simple household crafting items, sometimes adhesive such as glue and, of course, paper. For example, you can use the resources on Origami Way to make various different little paper shapes and objects, but there is no rule saying you can’t use other objects to accessorize your crafts. Let your children’s imaginations run wild!

Baking & Cooking

One thing all people have in common is that they all like to eat nice food. Why not use this bleak day to make some delicious food with and for the kids? Baking isn’t a very expensive task when done from scratch and can be a great way to teach teamwork and reward patience with a yummy treat. Simply figure out what it is you want to make, gather all the ingredients, and begin teaching your kids how to complete their select tasks. Just prepare for a little mess and remember to have fun whilst looking forward to the finished product!

Drawing

Drawing is one of those activities that can have almost infinite possibilities, so it’s a great way to inspire creativity in your youngsters. Not only that, but it’s incredibly cheap to do and has no real skill requirement other than your imagination. To help them along you can give them small ideas to draw or you can simply let them color in between the lines. Either way, you can get create some nice mementos of the past using this activity and place them around the house to remember. You may even stoke the fires of passion for drawing and watch them grow up as skilled artists.

Movies & Video Games

An activity that most of us do even when it isn’t raining is to watch movies and play games, especially nowadays. Video games are a standard activity for most kids, but they can also be used to educate and promote teamwork if you find the right ones. It’s a good idea to introduce the importance of challenge and competitiveness in the right setting so that you can teach them the limits before it becomes overly competitive. As for movies, why not create a comfortable den with blankets and bedding and watch your favorite movies in luxury.

We hope this article gives you some ideas of how to keep your critters occupied and grants you the opportunity to create some fond memories together. Come rain or sunshine, there is always something you can do, so enjoy yourselves!

Getting Your Children To Love Reading

April 10, 2018 by Lynn

Getting your child to read with a lot of distractions from the TV and smartphones can be quite daunting. The best way to go about is to start them young, when they are babies, and build on from that. Reading aloud to them while they are newborns significantly improves their language skills and starts them well to becoming avid readers as they grow.

It is important to have a conducive environment at home that supports reading. Sometimes it is not even that your children hate reading, the reason may be that there are so many distractions and the atmosphere is too chaotic for them to even concentrate on a book.

The tips below can help you raise a child who loves reading.

Have a variety of literature materials

Even adults find some books boring and fail to finish reading them, picking up a new one and regretting the time they spent poring over the boring book. Maybe your child just doesn’t like the book you gave them, but they still love reading nonetheless.

To develop your children’s love for reading, avail to them a variety of reading materials to choose from. Books, newspapers, magazines, storybooks and online media and blogs like Light House News Daily. This will keep them reading one story after the other and keep them from getting bored.

Relevant books

Sometimes your children aren’t reading because the material they have is too advanced for their understanding. As a general rule, if your child cannot pronounce or fathom the meaning of more than five words of a book they are currently reading then that books is too advanced for their age or understanding. In other words, the book may not be relevant to your child at that particular time in their development.

Let them have a choice

Your children may have different tastes and interests from yours. Do not force down books you like or think they should read on them. Let them have a say on the books that appeal to them. Take notice of the kind of books and stories that interest them and support them by buying them similar ones. This not only makes them fall in love with books but also fosters their ability to make independent decisions and boosts their confidence.

If you can’t afford a home library, visit your town library and let them choose books for themselves.

Storytelling techniques

While reading aloud to them, incorporate both verbal and non-verbal techniques in your narration to help them visualize how the story unfolds in their imagination. Adopt facial expressions, hand, and body movement and change the tone of your voice during your storytelling to keep them attentive and genuinely interested in the story.

Create a conducive environment for reading

Have a special reading time during which you switch off the TV and put away the mobile phones. This will prevent your children from getting distracted. Better still, you can join and have a family reading session where everyone has a book of their own.
