4 Ways to Keep Your Kids Amused on a Rainy Day

May 24, 2018 by Lynn

There are few feelings quite as disheartening as opening your curtains on a Saturday morning, only to be greeted with a deluge of rain from the heavens. Not only does that keep you from doing what you wanted to do today, it means you need to find something for the kids to do as well! Here are 4 excellent places to start.

Board Games

Board games are the perfect antidote to being bored. They aren’t as common a sight as they once were. Many of us grew up in homes that had dozens of board games (at least half of which would have pieces missing), and we have fond memories of passing many a rainy day sat around them. Today, with the ubiquitous nature of technology, many kinds find the idea of playing on a physical board very old fashioned.

You can find digital versions of many of the most popular board games ever made, often at a fraction of the price of the physical set. This can help to draw in the interest of children who would otherwise be uninterested in an ‘analogue’ form of entertainment.

Watch Something Enriching

One of the most common go-to activities for a rainy day is, of course, the television. Many parents would like it if they could get their kids to spend a little less time with their heads buried in their screens. However, if you choose the right thing for them to watch, there is no reason why a few hours in front of the TV can’t be time well spent.

Of course, any educational films or videos you can find will be a good choice, but they don’t have to be explicitly educational. Depending on the age of your kids, you might want to show them a movie that conveys a positive message to young children.

Homework Help

Getting children to do their homework is a common struggle for many parents. Unfortunately, there are no simple answers here, what works to motivate one child won’t necessarily work for another. However, one of the common themes among many children who are unwilling to do their homework is that they feel like they are losing time from more enjoyable activities. As a parent, one of the most important lessons you will have to teach them is that sometimes, the right thing to do isn’t the thing that feels best. With the rain pouring outside, preventing them from playing as they normally would, it might be easier to coax them into doing the work they need to.

Arts and Crafts

Why not take the opportunity to indulge their, and your own, creative side? There are an infinite number of art and craft projects that you can do at home. Whatever materials you happen to have lying around can be utilized in the making of arts and crafts. If you aren’t sure where to begin, there are lots of great resources online. One of the best I’ve found for finding stuff to do with my kids is reasonstoskipthehousework.com.

Many parents dread the next rainy day! But there really is no need. It is a good idea to have a list of go-to activities for when the weather is preventing you from being outside. Remember, boredom is the enemy, not your kids!

5 Reasons You Should Invest In A Whole House Filtration System

May 21, 2018 by Lynn

While we may often think that the water we drink is totally fine and free from toxins, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is that our drinking water contains a variety of toxins and their concentration depends mainly on the quality of the water treatment in your area. The quality of our tap water is often very questionable, and many are turning to water filtration systems as a solution. Here are 5 reasons why you should consider investing in one.

Better for Your Skin

Bad water doesn’t only affect drinking water, but the water you use while you bathe and take showers is affected too. Hard and bad water can have many health implications and could leave you covered in harmful toxins, heavy metals and toxic chemicals. The only way to ensure that your bath and shower water is 100% clean and safe is with a proper whole house water filter system.

Easy to Install

Contrary to what many may think, installing a whole house water system isn’t that complicated. If you’re used to DIY installations, then you should be able to install most whole house filtration systems on your own.

Better Tasting Food and Beverages

Another great benefit of a water filtration system is in the taste of the food and beverages you prepare. If you like a fresh cup of coffee in the morning, you’ll be surprised at how much of a difference clean, fresh water can make. It will also enhance the taste of any other recipe that calls for the use of water like cakes, bread, pastries and soups as well.

Long Term Savings

It has been estimated that Americans spend a total of over 16 billion dollars per year on bottled water alone. And what’s worse, is that many of these bottles of water contain nothing but filtered tap water. Can you imagine the amount of money you could save with your own water filtration system over its lifespan? With a whole house water filter, all you’ll have to do is use a refillable bottle and get all the fresh water you need whenever you want without spending a dime.

Better Air Quality

If you didn’t know that tap water could have a negative effect on your indoor air quality, then you’re in for a surprise. Chlorine can be extremely harmful to your lungs and respiratory system, and every time you use tap water, you release a certain amount of that chlorine into the air.

This is especially true when the water is hot. That means that massive amounts of chlorine are released into the air every time you take a hot shower or even when you’re boiling water over the stove. So, if you want to ensure optimal air quality in your house, it would be wise to invest in a good water filtration system. If you want more information on how to pick the proper water filtration system for your home, you can visit a site like Water Filter Answers for recommendations.

As you can see, there are many reasons why anyone should consider investing in a water filtration system. If you don’t know which type of unit would be best for your needs, make sure that you get as informed as you can before you make a decision.

Creative Ways to Landscape Your Lawn and Garden While Saving Tons of Money

May 18, 2018 by Lynn

No matter where you turn, the cost of everything keeps going up while wages seem to stagnate. Even though minimum wage is slowly rising, inflation is rising much faster, which makes it hard to budget, even at the best of times. Why not look at ways to landscape your lawn and garden, which can make your home the loveliest on the block while saving you tons of money in the process? Have you ever thought of growing your own fruits and vegetables? What about herbs? Some of these have the most beautiful blossoms and foliage on earth, but the best part is the savings you will realize on your grocery bills. Here are some ideas to explore.

Tips for New Gardeners

If you have never grown any of your own edible plants, you may want to learn how to germinate seeds, when to plant and when to harvest. You’ll also need to know what kinds of nutrients your plants will need for optimal growth and how to care for them along the way. New gardeners should always check out sites like Lovebackyard.Com to find reliable tips on fruit and vegetable gardening.

Beware of Crawlers

If you have limited space, the one type of plant you’ll want to avoid is a crawler. For example, zucchini is a great squash to grow in limited space because it is a ‘bush’ type squash. However, spaghetti squash is a crawler that sends tendrils out, which can easily take over the entire space you’ve allocated to it! It is important not only to know when to plant your veggies but also you will need to know how your plant grows, especially in small spaces. In fact, even without a garden area, some vegetables and fruits do very well in pots or containers.

Companion Plants for Added Beauty

Then there are companion plants that do well when growing next to each other in your garden area. This is because they release nutrients the others need for optimal health, but sometimes one plant adds something that the other lacks. Consider for a moment garlic and roses as companion plants. There is nothing particularly appealing about garlic. You eat the bulb that grows underground but the leaves are simply green stalks shooting up as the garlic grows.

When planted next to roses, both plants do extremely well in their companion nutrient-sharing life cycles. What is lovelier than a rose? When it comes to landscaping, you might not want to invest in decorative plants, but when they nourish plants you are growing to eat, the expense is well worth it, wouldn’t you say?

If at First You Don’t Succeed…

You may not get it right the first year you try your hand at landscaping with edible plants, but over time, you will find that you really can save tons of money by producing many of your own fruits, vegetables, tubers (potatoes) and greens. Have you checked the price of fresh produce lately? If you’ve noticed just how expensive these commodities are, you’ll be happy to have your very own garden that also serves to add beauty to your lawn and garden. Have fun and may you have a bounteous harvest this year and every year to follow.
