How to Give Your Home a More Contemporary Feel

March 27, 2023 by Lynn

Contemporary interior design is one of the most fascinating and, interestingly, most varied design themes and absolutely depends on the individual’s interpretation of it.

Often confused with modernism, contemporary design is far less specific and not held to a particular period and just represents present-day fashions and trends.

So, if you want to give your home a more contemporary design feel, continue reading.

Statement Stone Features

Stone and marble are two highly impactful, beautiful, and highly sustainable natural materials that scream contemporary design. To make a huge difference in the transition from traditional to contemporary, then statement stone is an ideal choice.

A shower unit is a perfect example of where statement stone can both metaphorically and quite literally shine, especially if you take the time to book-match the pieces. Hence, they combine to create a symmetrical yet natural image.

Bold & Bright Colors

For the smallest room in your home, or else if you are living in a somewhat ‘intimate’ space altogether, instead of finding ways of trying to make the space look larger than it actually is, embrace the space and make it the star of the floor.

Kitchens in townhouse apartments, for example, tend to be on the smaller and narrower side, so introducing one or two (complementing) colors to make your smaller spaces pop is a confident way of announcing your new contemporary design direction.

Keep Fixtures & Fittings Hidden

Lighting is at its best, especially in a contemporarily designed space, when it is of a flexible and interchangeable nature, either with dimmer switches or hidden LED strips, and when the room is unoccupied, or else there is no need for lighting, the fixtures and fittings should be subtle.

Directing the point of illumination to a specific part of the room, such as the top of the bathtub, is a fantastic way to adhere to a contemporary design framework while highlighting your favorite décor details. You can find the perfect lighting options at Ligne Roset Bromley to match any room or style of décor.

A Television House

Although numerous elements come together to create an apartment or house that looks and feels decidedly contemporary in style and design, there is one shortcut you must take to fulfill your own brief.

Hiding the television in either an ornate cabinet or in a high-tech way in which, when operational, the unit rises from a hidden base is an absolute mainstay of contemporary interior design.

Declutter

Finally, perhaps the easiest change to make from a more traditional to a decidedly more contemporary interior design feel in theory, sadly not in reality, is to keep each room as clutter-free as possible.

This can often be more difficult if you have small children, as you will need to have a lot of their things to hand. If you can strike a balance between functional and a clear aesthetic within your home, this could be effective way of bringing your home décor and design up to date.

5 Tips For Creating The Perfect Baby Nursery

March 14, 2023 by Lynn

One of the best parts of getting pregnant is the process of nesting. Creating the perfect space for your baby can not only be creatively fulfilling but also downright fun. Yet, if you’ve never had a baby before it can be overwhelming knowing what you do and don’t need. After all, marketers would have you believe that you need to spend millions for your baby’s nursery.

The good news is that creating a nursery doesn’t have to break the bank, or be overly complicated. To help you through the process, here are some of the most important things to keep in mind in order to create the perfect nursery.

Make Safety a Priority

One of the first things you should consider when creating your baby’s nursery is safety. Make sure that you put their bed in a location that is far from any electrical sockets, sharp objects, or anything that could fall on the bed. The placement of windows and curtains are also important factors to consider. Never put anything in your baby’s crib—even stuffed animals which could potentially suffocate them.

Add The Right Lighting

Lighting is essential when it comes to teaching your baby how to sleep on their own. Some babies may not appreciate total darkness, so you may want to add soft lighting that gives off a soft glow.

However, you don’t want to add too much lighting as this could keep your baby stimulated and discourage them from sleeping for long periods of time. Remember, in the beginning stages of the baby’s life, their nursery is for sleeping not playing. So, your job is to create an environment that promotes soothing and peaceful sleep habits.

Personalize

While it’s not necessary, it’s pleasant to personalize your baby’s nursery with objects that make it feel like it’s your baby’s and not just a generic room. Perhaps you can add some art, or photographs of family. You can also consider adding something like a mobile to the ceiling so your baby has something to look at as they lay and stare up. .

Always Be Practical

When choosing the materials that you need in your nursery, it’s easy to go overboard if we aren’t careful. Be practical and only buy the things that you absolutely need. That means a bed, a chair for feedings, somewhere to keep your children’s clothing, and perhaps extras like an air purifier or sound machine. The more somber and simplified you can keep the room, the more it will promote your baby reaching a sleepy state. Making it overly busy or full of things isn’t the goal when designing the interior of a nursery.

Eventually, your baby’s nursery will be a place for them to run and play in. But for now, it’s simply a place for them to lay their head and receive their feedings. So don’t overthink it, stick to the basics, and you’ll end up with a beautiful nursery that your child will thrive in!

How to Make Your Home Feel Bigger on a Budget

December 16, 2020 by Lynn

No matter how big your home is, it seems there’s never enough space to do everything you want to do in your home. The obvious solution would be to simply pack up all your belongings and move into a new home with more rooms, bigger social spaces, and even a garage or basement for more storage.

The only problem is that a bigger house comes with a bigger price tag that can often rule out any move to a more comfortable sized home. With that in mind, here are some ways you can make your home feel bigger while sticking to a budget.

Store your lesser used belongings outside the home

It’s likely that your home probably felt a lot bigger when you first moved into it. This is because it was probably the moment where you had the smallest number of belongings in it. Over the years, it’s highly likely that you will have bought more and more things to store in your home. You might have even bought new things like a game’s consoles or computer to replace older models, but you might still want to keep those older models in case if you want to engage in retro gaming.

If you can’t bear to part with some of your lesser used items, why not hire a storage locker to stow them away until you want to use them next. If you’re on a tight budget, you’re probably thinking about one important question, which is How Much Does a Storage Unit Cost? Well, if you use the services of a company that offers a number of different sized lockers, you could end up finding a space just big enough to store all your belongings for a surprisingly low price. Some lockers are on offer for as little as $60 dollars per month, which is a cost-effective way of providing more space in your home.

Organize your belongings

If you find your home is still full of items even after you’ve got rid of those things you don’t use very often, it’s time to work on better storage solutions in your home. If you’ve got a tall cupboard, make sure you’re making full use of the height of the space. Install lots of shelves so you can break the space up into multiple sections and not just balance on top of another precariously. This way you’ll be able to clearly spot and access any item when you need it.

Sell anything you don’t need

If you have items that you don’t have any use for whatsoever, the best thing to do is to simply sell those items. Not only will they no longer be cluttering your home, but you can also make money off them as well. Simply take a high-quality photo of whatever you want to sell, and post it on a website like Facebook Marketplace. Then you just need to wait for someone to buy it off you and arrange a convenient time to pick it up.

How to Design a Home Office

October 30, 2020 by Lynn

With more and more people working from home in recent years (especially in recent months due to the coronavirus pandemic), the need for a home office has increased. It can be very difficult to work efficiently in areas of the house where there may be distractions from other people and tasks. Having a separate room for working is not just great for your productivity but can also provide benefits for your mental health and sense of wellbeing. Working from home can lead to a disrupted work-life balance, where it is difficult to get into “work mode” in the mornings and equally difficult to get into “rest mode” at the end of the day. Having a separate home office room can help you to divide work life and home life, especially if you only use that room for working and nothing else!

Choosing a Desk

One thing that is essential for a home office is a suitable desk. Even if you only use a small laptop rather than a full desktop PC with separate monitor and keyboard, sitting at a desk is preferable. A desk can also be useful for storage, for making notes on paper, and as a place to put your cup of coffee!

There are many desks specifically designed for offices. Although many of the desks used in office blocks around the world are only available from office furniture suppliers aimed at businesses, you can still find suitable desks as a home consumer. Desks with grommet holes (circular holes for cable management) can keep your workspace tidy and avoid electrical cables trailing.

Electrics

If you are setting up a computer in your home office, you will need to consider if there are enough electrical sockets for everything that you need (e.g. a PC, a monitor, speakers, a separate laptop if needed, etc). Extension cables are useful, and sites like powerpointelectrics.co.uk can help you to install or modify electrical sockets if needed.

Choosing a Chair

Choosing the right type of office chair is more important than you might think. After all, you will most likely be spending several hours each day sitting on it. Sitting on an unsuitable chair can not only be uncomfortable but can also lead to bad posture and long-term back and neck issues. Adjustable back rests and arm rests are highly recommended. An office chair is one area where going for the cheapest option can cost you more (in terms of health) in the long run.

Choosing Décor

Office décor is actually surprisingly important. Studies have shown that the décor of a room is linked to productivity, efficiency, and job satisfaction. This is not surprising considering the fact that you will be spending many hours on end in the office. In terms of what specific décor works best for you in your home office, your personal preferences will be most important. However, there are some design tips that will work for most people. For example, calming colours on the walls, natural lighting, and lack of clutter are highly recommended for a working space.

Simple Ways to Upgrade Your Kitchen

September 25, 2020 by Lynn

When a kitchen is looking good, there’s no better and more stylish area in a house. However, the opposite is also true: when a kitchen is looking tired, outdated, and well worn, there aren’t many places in your house where you wouldn’t want to be in less.

Redoing an entire kitchen can be pretty costly, but thankfully, there are simple, easy and cheap ways to upgrade your kitchen and give it a new lease on life. Here’s some simple ways to actually do that.

Give Your Cabinets a Makeover

Aside from maybe the countertops, there’s nothing more impactful within the kitchen than the cabinets and shelves that surround it. Because of this, one of the best ways to give your entire kitchen a lift is to do some simple renovations on your kitchen furniture. The easiest way to do this is to give them a new lick of paint. This can freshen them up, make them pop more, and also cover up any stains or scuffs and scratches.

Another option to breathe life into your cabinets is to replace the fittings and handles with more modern and glamorous options. With the right handle you can turn these inconspicuous parts of a kitchen into a trendy focal point, and they usually don’t cost that much.

A final option to really reinvent your cabinets is to completely remove the doors and hinges and have open shelving. This creates a very modern and airy kitchen and can make it look minimalistic, clean, and critically, spacious. Be cautious that this means that all your mugs, cutlery, and utensils will be on display, but you can use this to your advantage and invest in things that match the color scheme of your home for better synergy.

Replace the Kitchen Door

If your kitchen has a door, or even a hatch on the wall between the kitchen and the dining area, then you can use these features to really enhance your kitchen and give it a unique flavor. Firstly, you can invest in kitchen replacement doors Bolton to add a splash of something new to your kitchen. Be adventurous and consider funky designs and colors to turn your doors into interesting focal points that can make you love your kitchen again.

Upgrade Your Tiles and Splash Back Area

The majority of kitchens utilize tiles behind their hobs as they resist oil splash back. These are areas you can easily alter to add a new spark into your kitchen. Firstly, you can simply paint your tiles with special tile paint to give them a new burst of color, or you can change the color of your grouting to make a substantial impact, too.

A good option is to use contrasting yet complementing colors with your tiles to make them more eye catching, such as white tiles and black grouting. You can also replace your splash back areas with new tiles, and you can even get tiles that have their own designs. You may also want to add a glass or stainless-steel splash back, which can be equally sophisticated and protect your back walls really well.
