College Inn broth has launched a recipe contest on their Facebook page (between now and October 28th) and is interested in hearing about your family recipes that have been passed down for generations.
Sadly, I don’t have many from my own family, but last Christmas, my husband’s aunt gave everyone a small recipe booklet with some of the family’s favorite dishes from their grandparents. My husband loves family dishes, and so I hope to continue their traditions with our children.
One recipe in the booklet is simply Potato Soup. I decided to change it up just a little, even though it’s a very simple recipe.
Crock Pot Ham and Potato Soup
Gather all your ingredients.
You want to peel, wash, and dice up all five potatoes. In the crock pot add the potatoes, ham, carrots, and chicken broth. Cook on low for 6-8 hours.
About four hours in, is when you add in the canned milk and noodles.
Gather everything into the crock-pot, and you now have an easy a delicious home cooked meal by dinner time.
Ingredients
- 5 potatoes
- 2 cans evaporated milk (fat free)
- 4 cups College Inn Light and Fat Free Chicken Broth
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup diced carrots
- 2 cups diced ham
- 8 oz egg noddles
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
Instructions
- Wash, peel, and dice the potatoes and add to crockpot, along with the diced ham, the diced carrots, and the Chicken Broth. Add enough water to cover the rest. I used about a cup.
- Cook on low about four hours.
- Add in both cans of milk and noodles. Add in salt and pepper.
- Cook on low for another 2-4 hours, or until everything is cooked through.
The College Inn recipe contest is all about inspiring at-home chefs (like you and me) to put a new twist on family favorites.
The grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a three day trip to San Francisco for two to attend a Share Our Strength No Kid Hungry charity dinner with Chef Freitag. Two category winners will win a $500 cash prize.
Even more awesome, for each eligible recipe entry, College Inn will donate $1 (up to $20,000) towards the Share Our Strength No Kid Hungry campaign, to help end childhood hunger in America.
Voting starts November 5th through the 18th and winners will be determined by taste, creativity and inspiration, appearance, and consumer votes. Plus, hey have teamed up with Food Network’s “Chopped” judge, Chef Amanda Freitag, to help decide who has the ultimate family recipe.
To help encourage you to share your family recipe, I am giving away a College Inn Ultimate Recipe Challenge Prize package to one of you. The prize package includes College Inn product, a 5-piece cutting board set, soup to-go mug, and 60-minute kitchen timer. Enter below and good luck!
I received product, compensation, and info from College Inn. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

We have a special chicken and broccoli casserolle dish
What a sweet and thoughtful gift. I also only have a few recipes since my Mom wasn’t much of a cook or recipe collector. I tend to make things from my husband’s family also.
Don’t laugh, but my favorite family recipe (soup) is my family Borscht. I am German/Polish and my Great Grandparents operated a soup kitchen in Chicago using all their family soups. From Borscht, I am a sucker for beets and sour cream, to vegetable or bean soups it is all earthy and simple fare.
