NYC Bans Large Sized Sodas – Why Are You Okay With It?

If you haven’t already heard, the mayor of New York City has banned restaurants and stores from selling any large sized soda pops.

I personally haven’t had a sip of soda, unless you count Hansen’s Soda, which to me is a much better alternative, since earlier this year. Before, I even started my Mamavation Mom campaign. So the reason I don’t agree with this, has nothing to do with soda it’s self. It has to do with the fact that people are okay with letting the government tell us what we can and cannot do, or in this case drink.

Last time I checked, we as parents are the ones who are supposed to be teaching our kids what foods are good for you, and what foods you should limit.

I have seen a lot of friends on Facebook comment about how this is a great way to stop children from consuming much more then they need, but I really don’t think it will. You can take away the bigger options, but it is not going to stop them.

We as PARENTS need to educate our children.

ADULTS need to make their own decisions.

NOT the government.

About Hanan Webster

In 2010, Hanan went from talking about her parenting up’s and down’s on private forums to discussing them with literally everyone on the internet with her blog lilac city momma. Since then, she’s had the opportunity to talk about parenting, cooking, photography, marriage, crafts, faith, and so much more. She also shares her opinions on everyday products from food to baby gear, and everything in between. With three little girls all under six, there is never a dull moment in their home. When she’s not blogging she’s chatting about parenting and life in general on Facebook and Twitter, or wasting way too much time on Pinterest.

  1. Totally agree. Why large sodas certainly aren’t healthy, why in the heck are people dictating?

It is kind of funny to me though that the govt is trying to do something HEALTHY and actually GOOD for us. There must be a hidden agenda. :)

I don’t understand or condone the government banning me from drinking a drink. I think soda and caffeine are alright so long as your portion control yourself. I personally quit smoking a few years ago and it helps me so much sometimes, but I’ve slowly replaced that with chewing gum. Personally, I’d rather waste my empty calories on desert or Pirate’s Booty (which is literally the only chip type thing I can eat since it’s gluten-free). I hate that this is ok, why not waste the money on something meaningful like having places for Mom’s to pump or quiet places in the city to breastfeed? Having been there/lived in the city for a short while I think it’s horrible that they aren’t advocating for other much needed legislation than something silly like soda. They’re going to have to downsize the liquor portions next because parents are going to need a drink when there’s no caffeine to motivate their teenagers to get out of bed. Speaking of which, what about Redbull? That’s far more lethal in larger portions, and calories combined (not even going to comment on the sugar-free, which is made with fake sugar which will kill you), but why wasn’t that regulated too?

  4. You’re completely right. I drink diet soda, but the point of this is that the government shouldn’t stop me from eating a vat of lard if I want to. They are slowly taking away our freedoms, and we are letting it happen. Mayor Bloomberg also wants to keep infant formula under lock and key in hospitals to “encourage” (force) women to breastfeed. While breast is best, again the government needs to stay out of personal decisions.

  5. I wonder why they continue to allow cigarettes but a large soda is a big no-no?
I think that both are unhealthy…

I totally agree with you. Our freedom is slipping away. I don’t drink much soda anymore, but I don’t like the government stepping into this area of my life.

  7. so what now they will buy 2 smalls really? He thinks that will get people to stop drinking soda. What a a wacko.bad enough they take away a small fry and give the kids a itty bitty fry and apples in Mc Donalds and NOW I have to specifically say NO Apples more fries or I end of giving my son mine. Geez.
