When you go to the grocery store, do you plan out what you are going to get? Or do you just throw things in the cart as you go?
To keep my crazy busy life a little more organized, I always print out a grocery shopping list and write down exactly what I need to get. I usually start with the basics, milk, eggs, bread, meat, fruits and vegetables.
Since starting my diet life change a few months ago and after going through my Mamavation Mom campaign, I have swayed away from food that comes in boxes and cans and have tried to purchase more fresh produce, whole grains, and better snack choices for the girls. It hasn’t been easy to get my family to adjust. For one, it’s more expensive to buy fresh, natural, organic, and the “better” stuff. Plus kids love sugar. At least mine do. I do find that we tend to eat smaller meals now and don’t eat out nearly as often as we used to before.
For me, our lifestyle change has been huge for us this year.
Last week, I went to Fred Meyer with the girls in tow. As I finished unloading my cart full of groceries on to the belt, the cashier – a pretty young girl probably in her early twenties said something to me that just really made me feel great. She said,
“It’s so nice to see someone buying healthy food. Especially with kids.”
I did not expect to hear that from anyone, let alone her. She continued to talk about how many parents come through her line with nothing but junk food. She talked about how she has changed her lifestyle as well, and it really makes you notice more of what is around you.
Now, don’t get me wrong. We’re not perfect. They do get a cookie from the bakery every time we go to the store, and I still buy them Annie’s Crackers, Pirate Booty, and granola bars which are very popular in our house.
The thing is my kids are young enough now, that I can try to teach them to make better choices.
After hearing that from a total stranger, it made me feel like this was another one of my mom victories!
What’s one of your recent Mom Victories?

I can see why that made you feel good! She’s right. It’s way easier to just buy the processed foods and snacks, and too many people do that. Glad you’re living healthy!

That is awesome! I have been trying to do the same – my big thing is I haven’t been buying anything for him with HFCS – a definite no in our house!
Melissa recent post: Interview with Brave’s Director Mark Andrews
That is a great step!! I constantly check for HFCS in everything now too!
I too have been working on the same since becoming a Mamavation Mom. I love that Kroger is celebrating Mom’s everyday victories. Sometimes those things go unnoticed.

I love that you’ve moved to less processed foods. That’s what we’re working on here, too. It can be a challenge, but one that we’re ready to take along with you. Thanks for the motivation!

I have started heading to a local farmers market to purchase fresh fruits and veggie. That is what I love about the summer months, my kids would gladly eat a peach or apple over chips and cookies.
Also, if you have a local farmers market you should check it out. Our fresh produce is about 50% less then at the grocery store!

The farmer’s market is a GREAT way to buy fresh AND local!! Awesome!
I always have a list when I go grocery shopping, but I rarely come home with only the items listed! :)
My latest mission is to buy more fresh fruits and veggies for snacking and less boxed snacks!

I have been eating much less processed foods! I do all my shopping in the organic aisles or at farmers markets. This is a great campaign!
If I don’t plan my menu and take my list it is a disaster.

My most recent victory was going to opening day at our local farmer’s market. I was thrilled! It felt so good to come home with a bag full of local, organic foods – produce and baked goods!

That is awesome! I love our local Farmer’s Market as well.
I would love to visit the farmers market more often but it’s not convenient. We buy tons of fresh produce but from the grocery store I would love to get it more local though.

That’s great – how awesome to hear that from the cashier. I find more and more people are making healthier changes. I can’t tell you how happy it made me when I saw young people discussing ingredients in something they were buying – so impressive. :)

I really hope it starts to “rub off” on our children!!
My recent mom victory would be joining Jenny Craig. I need to get into shape so I can take care of my three girls.
Kerri recent post: Jenny Set, Here I Go on @JennyCraig
That’s great Kerri! Good luck to you!!
That is awesome that she said that! I’ve felt the same way so many times when I’m in the checkout line and see what the person in front of me is buying. It amazes me how much junk people buy!
