Now, more then ever I see homeless individuals out on the street. The way the economy has been the past couple of years, more and more people are struggling. Very often when I pass these people, I feel like I want to help them, but don’t want to feel like my money will be used the wrong way or I’m just not quite sure how to help. Because honestly, I know they need much more then what I can offer.
One day when I came across this blog, talking about Blessing Bags, I knew that this would be a perfect way to help them, even if it’s just a little!
It’s a very simple idea, that you can do at home with your family, at your church, or with a group of friends.
The idea is to buy these items in bulk, so that you can make several blessing bags at once, to keep with you in the car at all times.
To make them, simply use a gallon size ziplock bag and fill it with any or all of these:
- toiletries – soap, deodiant, shampoo
- medicine
- tissues and hand wipes
- snacks
- juice or water
- a couple of dollars in change
- small gift card (walmart or coffee shop)
- socks or gloves – for winter
- a book for reading or puzzels
- small note of encouragement
You can add pretty much anything you think would be of good use.
I think this is an absolutely great idea for families to do right before the holidays or any time of year really!

That’s a really good idea. In the major city near me I see a lot of them and I feel horrible. Great message to spread!

I see a lot of homeless around here as well. In the mornings on the way to school I try to get a quick breakfast and drink and drop it off to the guy I always see at the corner. He gets so excited when he has some food given to him. I like this idea too. thanks for sharing

What a great idea! I love this!! At my job we do this type of thing around the holidays for many of our students families but with gifts and food.

What a fantastic idea~ I am always getting tons of samples of shampoo/conditioner, etc. I could use those to make some of these baggies, too. I agree with you about wanting to help but not always wanting to give money because you never really know what it is going to go towards.
Thanks for this suggestion, this is one of my missions for the holiday season.

This is so awesome!! I’m for sure going to do this. A few years ago, I was giving this specific person money every time I would see him and it ended up being almost $300 when I finally added it all up. {A few times a gave him 25 or a meal because it was a holiday or just because I had a little extra.} I called him “Amherst” because he always had on a sweatshirt with this on the front and back. The last time I ever gave him money I told him I couldn’t afford it any more and asked his name. He told me his name was Roger and asked for a hug and said he considered me a friend and that he always prayed I would be safe. This meant so much to me and I’ll never forget it. Doing things for others will seriously change your life forever. I will never forget the man on the side of the highway exit with dirty clothes and a long beard, that gave me a hug, a name, and a warm heart.
I hope a lot of people make little bags like these!

That is a wonderful idea. I don’t see many in our small area, but I know they are out there needing some sort of help.

Very good idea. FYI last year I made packages to ship to soldiers but when I put deoderant with food the smells mixed. But love the idea, thanks!
Good to know, thanks Katy!
This is such an amazing idea. Especially coming into the holiday season, this allows families to focus on what’s important and not worry as much about the little things. The blessing bags also allow those less fortunate realize that there are loving people out there still that just want to help. Bless your heart!

Sound like a great idea
Great way to make emergency bags, also!
I really like this idea. I hate giving money to the homeless in our area because we have a crack problem – but I’d be completely open to doing this. Everyone needs to eat!!
